The Army Battle School is a strategic asset of the Republic of South Africa due to the extent and nature of the area and the cost of the infrastructure.
The claims have been referred to the Land Claims Court for a finding.
Schmidtsdrift

The SANDF has decided to vacate the area as soon as an alternative training terrain is acquired and subject to the resettlement of the SAN community.
Alternative land for the DoD was identified. DPW has done a pilot evaluation on the land and is to request the Department of State Expenditure for additional funds. The SAN community has identified and bought alternative land. The Provincial Legislature has now entered into negotiations in resettling the SAN community.

The Minister of Defence has approved the return of the land to the Department of Public Works.

Due to civilian air routes over Kwazulu-Natal the training base cannot be moved to an alternative site. DoD cannot fulfil its training requirements in the area if they lose this base.
The regional Land Claims Commissioner is currently considering the DoD input.

The Department of Defence has indicated their willingness to relinquish the land but have a constitutional task to patrol the border.
An agreement has been reached that will be signed on 30 May 1998, when the land will also be returned to the community.
